Chapter Fifteen

They followed the Adventuring party back to the inn, pausing only long enough for Ren to furtively scrape up what was left of his messenger construct and send it limping home to his family to let them know that he was in fact, still alive. With any luck, his mother wouldn’t beat it to powder with her broom before it could deliver its message.

The Blind Dog was, understandably, deserted, and it took some cajoling to convince the owner to unbar the door and let them in at all. But Roderick managed to convince the man that it was safe, and even if it wasn’t, having seven Adventurers inside would make the inn the safest place in town.

Ren tried not to preen at being included in the ranks, but Yana saw right through him. She elbowed him playfully in the ribs, and only a desire to appear like an adult kept him from sticking his tongue out at her in response.

In short order, Ren found himself tankard in hand and ensconced at a table, shoulder to shoulder between Roderick and the blond man in furs, who was introduced to him as Talen. Yana sat across from him between Sylvatus and Nima.

Yana kept glancing in Sylvatus’s direction, and at first Ren assumed that she was sneaking peeks at the elf’s handsome features. But he quickly realized that all those longing gazes were directed at the fine curve of his silver-strung bow rising up over his shoulder. Ren ducked his head, hiding his amusement in his raised tankard.

Roderick took a healthy swallow of his ale before turning to Ren. “So, you say you made that light, but you also say you’re not a Mage.”

It wasn’t technically a question, but Ren answered anyway. “That’s right.”

Markus frowned, twirling a slender knife between his fingers. Somehow, it didn’t read as a threat, more an idle gesture to keep his hands busy. “How does that work?”

An excellent question. One that Ren was sure they wouldn’t like the answer to, which was really little more than a shrug, but he’d try anyway.

“Well.” He set his tankard down on the table. “I inscribe the item with the parameters I want the magic to take, and then the power kind of flows along those channels, and…” he made an awkward gesture with his hand. “The item works.”

“So, let me get this straight,” Roderick said, his heavy brows pulled together. “You aren’t a Mage. But you can make magic items?”

Ren dabbed absently at a spot on his cuff where he’d managed to drag it through a puddle of unknown liquid on the table’s surface. “Well, yes. And Constructs.”

Though considering how awkwardly those had mostly turned out, perhaps he shouldn’t have volunteered that information. He cringed at what people like Roderick and Markus would think of his lumpy, leaf bewinged little messenger.

Markus whistled, a long, low sound. “That would be a bloody gold mine, if you could slip them past the Guild.”

“What runes do you use?” Nima’s head cocked to one side.
